Gaudete! Rejoice! 🌹
Today is the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. The rose candle is lit, the priest may wear rose vestments, and the whole Church takes a joyful breath because Christmas is near.
The name comes from the first word of today’s Entrance Antiphon: Gaudete in Domino semper. “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).
And for centuries, that invitation has been sung in one very special way: Gregorian chant.
The original “lo-fi beats to pray to”
Long before playlists for studying, there was chant.
One melody line. No instruments needed. Just the Word of God, carried by the human voice, rising and falling like a breath.
The Second Vatican Council called Gregorian chant specially suited to the Roman liturgy and said it should be given pride of place. (So the next time someone says chant is “old-fashioned,” you can tell them Vatican II has entered the chat.)
Meet Cassia & Myrrh
Cassia & Myrrh is a Catholic musical project that seeks to bring souls closer to Christ and His Church through beauty.
Sung in a solo female voice, their music is gentle and contemplative, offered with simplicity and humility. They describe it as music for the fighting saint: a refuge in the middle of the noise and chaos of modern life.
Their Gregorian Chapter is an invitation to deeper prayer and real Christian meditation. Not background music. Prayer music.
When to listen this Advent
While you wrap gifts. Turn the chaos of tape and tissue paper into a moment of peace.
On your commute. Trade the traffic report for something that lifts your soul.
Before Mass. Let it quite your heart so you’re actually present (and not mentally planning lunch).
During adoration or quiet prayer. When words run out, let the chant pray with you.
Press play and rejoice
Gaudete Sunday reminds us that Advent isn’t gloomy. It’s a season of joyful hope.
And few things say “joyful hope” like ancient melodies that the Church has been praying for over a thousand years.
