Those who wait until Christmas Eve to play a single carol. And those who started humming “Joy to the World” sometime around Halloween.

We love you both. (We’re slightly more concerned about the second group.)

Why December 17 is special

Today the liturgy shifts gears. From December 17 to 24, Advent enters its final stretch, focused directly on the coming birth of Jesus.

It’s also the day the O Antiphons begin. These ancient titles for Christ, like O Wisdom, O Root of Jesse, and O Emmanuel, are prayed one each day until December 23.

Fun fact: the beloved hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is based on them. So if you’ve been singing it, congratulations. You’ve been praying the liturgy all along.
