On July 6, the Church celebrates the feast of one of her youngest and most courageous saints: St. Maria Goretti, a modern martyr, a fearless witness to purity, and a radiant example of mercy.
Though just 11 years old, Maria’s heroic life and tragic death shine a blinding light into our dark world, reminding us that holiness doesn’t require age, status, or power. It just requires love. And Maria had it in abundance.
Who Was St. Maria Goretti?
Born in 1890 to a poor Italian farming family, Maria Goretti grew up in hardship, helping care for her siblings after her father’s death. But even in the midst of poverty, she clung tightly to her faith and her love for Jesus.
In 1902, at only 11 years old, Maria was attacked by a young man who tried to violate her. She resisted, crying out that what he wanted was a sin. In a fit of rage, he stabbed her multiple times. Before she died, Maria forgave him, by name.
Years later, her attacker repented, had a conversion in prison, and even attended her canonization.
Why She Still Matters Today
In a world that often misunderstands purity and mocks forgiveness, St. Maria Goretti offers a radical alternative. She didn’t choose violence. She didn’t choose bitterness. She chose heaven. She chose mercy. She chose Jesus.
Maria was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950 in front of a crowd of 500,000, her mother among them, the first time a mother saw her child declared a saint.
