A Life of Compassion and Service

We find hope in the life and legacy of St. John of God, the patron saint of mental health and hospitals, whose story is one of radical transformation, from a soldier and wanderer to a tireless servant of the poor and mentally ill.

Born in 1495 in Portugal, after a powerful conversion at age 40, he founded the Brothers Hospitallers, dedicating himself to caring for the sick and homeless, treating not only physical illnesses but also mental and spiritual wounds. He died in 1550 after saving a drowning man.
