Such is the story of Fr. Markus Stehmer, LC, a Legionary priest whose journey from secular Germany to the priesthood reflects a remarkable narrative of trust, surrender, and joy in Christ’s plan.

Early Life: A Seed Planted Amid Transition

Fr. Markus was born in Cologne, Germany. A pivotal moment came when his mother attended a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, bringing home a love for the Rosary.

The Turning Point: A Ski Trip to Grace

At 16, on a ski trip with a Catholic apostolate, he had an encounter with Christ in the Mass that changed the trajectory of his entire life. “The Mass that day wasn’t just another obligation, it was alive.”

Answering the Call

He entered the Legionaries of Christ in 2009, with formation taking him across Europe, from Germany to Salamanca, Spain, to Rome.

Philadelphia: A New Mission Field

In 2023, Fr. Markus was ordained a priest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, and shortly after was assigned to serve in Philadelphia. “I’m a missionary priest. So I signed up for that. I want to do what the Lord wants from me.”
